Research Problem
Patients who undergo orthognathic surgery spend around two months in postoperative recovery at home. However, patients who lack appropriate perioperative education may have difficulty managing complex care schedules. Even caregivers with advanced education levels still lack confidence during postoperative management and recovery.
Research goal
Develop a prototype IMB-based serious game that allows caregivers to practice making self-care decisions in a simulated role-play environment. The player will receive different tasks based on learning goals.
Learning objective
The end-user will be more confident in managing pain, oral and nasal care, and they will have correct expectations on facial swelling progress.
Process
Research / Communication
A content chart was organized based on the information on the educational website (link). After communicating with content experts to understand key learning points, the task list was generated.
Design document / Flow chart
The flow chart was created to plan the user flow after committees and content expert approved the proposed game mechanics
Prototyping / Scene Setup
Greyboxing was used in this stage to refine user flow, layout, game mechanics, and refine functionality. The functional prototype was programmed in the Unity.
Design
After the research committee approved the functional prototype, the style guide was created in Adobe Illustrator. The 3D models were developed in Autodesk 3dsMax and Blender.
Assets integration
I polished the Unity scenes, UI, and models. Post-processing and sound effects were added to the game in this stage.
